Happiness Is… Teen Devotion

Happiness Is…

One is happy as a result of one’s own efforts, once one knows the necessary ingredients of happiness – simple tastes, a certain degree of courage, self-denial to a point, love of work, and above all, a clear conscience. Happiness is no vague dream, of that I now feel certain. – George Sand (1804 – 1876)

Are you happy? Are you sure? I’m pretty sure that most people want happiness, yet I’m also convinced that they are trying to gain it through all the wrong ways. It’s almost as if their lives are like a long drive trying to get to a certain destination, but they keep taking mistaken turns and eventually are lost in a myriad of dead end streets.

Do you think that God wants you to be happy? I’ve heard sermons from both sides- and I find it fascinating that those who think God is against happiness are generally pretty sour faced themselves. Conversely those who preach a gospel of giddy glee are usually livin’ la vida loca!

For me, I’d say yes and no. Yes God wants you to be happy, but not at the expense of being holy. Jesus actually gave us step by step instructions for inner joy- and the reason He took time to do that was because He really does care about the state of your personal being. He also delineates on delighting in life because He definitely wants you to watch out for the Devil‘s guidebook to happiness.

So let’s take a look at the blueprint of Jesus (Matthew 5:3-11) and the bull of the Devil (stuff I made up):

  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule.”
  • Satan: “You’re happy when you get your own way. With more of you there is less of that ridiculous God stuff.”
  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you.”
  • Satan: “You’re happy when you feel like you got everything you’ve ever wanted. Then you won’t have to be embraced by anyone.”
  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are–no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.”
  • Satan: “You’ll never be happy unless you are just like the beautiful people on magazines and in movies. That’s the moment you’ll find that everyone is jealous of you.”
  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.”
  • Satan: “You’re happy when you get away from the silly Sunday School talk. God is smoke and mirrors and His way is the worst way to live life.”
  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when you care. At the moment of being “careful,’ you find yourselves cared for.”
  • Satan: “You’re happy when you only care about yourself. Those people out there don’t deserve your concern.”
  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when you get your inside world–your mind and heart–put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.”
  • Satan: “You’re happy when you only concern is your outer world- looks, clothes, and toys.”
  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.”
  • Satan: “You’re happy when you get on the side of the powerful people in the world. That’s when you make friends whom you can use later on.”
  • Jesus: “You’re blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution. The persecution drives you even deeper into God’s kingdom. “Not only that–count yourselves blessed every time people put you down or throw you out or speak lies about you to discredit me. What it means is that the truth is too close for comfort and they are uncomfortable.”
  • Satan: “You’re happy when your beliefs don’t offend anyone. Who are you to push your morality on anyone else? Stay happy by keeping everyone else happy.”

I think you see the difference…happiness is all in the eye of the beholder. Just keep in mind the Eye that beholds you is the only One who can see you through to true contentment.

Questions:

What or whom are you looking to for happiness?

Does Jesus or the Devil make more sense? Why?

Which of Jesus’ ideas are you willing to give a try?

Got Peace? Teen Devotion

Got Peace?

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them.
One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror, for peaceful
The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But towering mountains were all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest… perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize?

The King chose the second picture. “Because,” explained the King, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning
Seems to me that most of us would have chosen the first picture- I know I would have. And do you know why? Because we’ve been deceived into thinking that
peace is a by-product of circumstances. That at some point we will get all of our stuff together, and all will be as calm as a mountain lake on a perfect dayof peace.” (Catherine Marshall)

So we toil and strive trying to find tranquility in our lives by trying to remove all that seems difficult. In the back of our minds is a little voice saying: “if only…”

  • If only I didn’t have to go to school
  • If only I didn’t have to work
  • If only I had a different family
  • If only I had more money
  • If only I had more time
  • If only (fill in the blank), I would have more peace in my life.

Meanwhile, God in Heaven is longing to give you the stillness you are looking for…and He is whispering “If only you would look to me for true peace, I would give it to you”.

The King in the story is right. True peace can be found even in the midst of the most difficult and trying circumstances, because God lives inside you. He really desires for you to live life the way He designed it, which is to be at peace with yourself and the world around you.

So how do you get there?

Not by changing your circumstances, because you really don’t have a lot of control in that area. Oh sure, you have choices, but you cannot control the choices that other people make-which is usually what ends up trashing our tranquility.

The secret to internal peace is changing your perspective. Here’s the advice God gives:

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you! (Isaiah 26:3)

Simple principle, don’t you think? Yet sometimes very difficult to apply. Basically, if your mind is constantly fixed on God and His Word, there remains no room for the attacks of worry and stress that kill any hope of peace in our lives. Like the little bird, we need to quit looking around and start looking up to our Creator, and repeating over and over what He has already promised us.

Where to start? Here are a few promises that you can stash in your nest for future study:

  • Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27)
  • I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
  • But the fruit of the Spirit is…peace (Galatians 5:22)
  • Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6)

Got peace?

Questions:

How many hours of the day do you experience true peace?

What is keeping you from fixing your thoughts on God?

Which verse from the ones above speaks the loudest to you right now?

via Got Peace? Teen Devotion – Dare 2 Share Youth Ministry Resources.

Just this morning as I was reading this, my pessimistic mother was bombarding me with discouraging thoughts about life, and how our family is so poor and everything, but no matter how much she insists that, A promise of God always pop-ups to my mind, the promise goes something like... "seek first the kingdom of God and everything shall be added unto you."
Dear brothers and sisters, God is such a big celebrity, all of his fans (children) would always get the critics up in their faces, always questioning, always wanting, always whining about something, God tells us to be at peace, just seek Him and you will be equipped with wisdom you cannot fathom for it is God's not yours.
God Bless you all this Sunday :)

If I were the Devil « Pastor Mike Says

“I would compel people to express their most depraved fantasies on canvas and movie screens, and I would call it art”

via If I were the Devil « Pastor Mike Says.

This is just a line that struck me when I read Pastor’s post. Somethings been really bothering about Lady Gaga’s “freedom” fight. I’m all for freedom, but I think she’s going a little too overboard with it. In my mind “it’s really just how the fashion industry works, it’s just how pop culture works- it’ll pass.” But on the other hand “history repeats itself”. That’s why we even believe of Christs great comeback and of course because it is written in the Scriptures.

I don’t expect everyone to crawl under their desks and start reading the bible panicking that God is someone to be greatly feared, God’s proven his Love and Mercy, none can compare to it, it’s fair to say that we humans are

the one’s who should be greatly fearing each other, feeding each other lies and covering up our motives with “peace”. Well I don’t know, I am nothing without Christ. I just always tell myself that.

It just is weird, to me, personally I never liked the idea of short-short (to the nth power) skirts, that you couldn’t even barely say it’s clothes, like in my earlier post I said “What happened to all the thread? Are we in some kind of Cloth Crisis?” Being a guy, it makes it very challenging, the devil is smart but God always prevails and I believe that He has purpose in things, I may not be able to convert anyone soon or I’d even get hated for me not being a big fan Lady Gaga. But that’s how I see it, how about you?

“You gotta stand for something or you’ll fall for anything” – Fall for anything by The Script

To God be All the Glory!

Fictional Faction of Friction

The wonderful cliche of Living

“You enjoy every moment, you look over her shoulder, and you don’t notice anyone at all, everything else is a blur, but when you get your attention back to her face you see everything, a future, a past and that beautiful present God‘s given you”

To tell you all honestly, I just thought of that quote now, and I was just going to talk about how silly it was for a person to fall in love with a person. But as I read back to those words I type, I slowly become even more confused.

Let me just check myself for a moment, I’m alive and still living in a country where it’s more of a pop culture to be in a relationship. I guess there’s just a lot of bad examples, that’s why my mind (your heart is actually hardwired into your brain’s hypothalamus so I don’t want to say “my hear thinks” ’cause it doesn’t) is so caught up with worrying whether or not I’m going to go through with this feeling.

And also I’m somewhat paranoid about things, what my mom would say,

The best way, if it’s the only way 😀

what my sister would say, what my colleagues would say, but mostly what my mom would say, she’s too narrow minded to really support me in my relationships, heck, if she had it her way she would want me to grow up with no wife because she wants to get rich, it’s always about getting rich for her.

But for me, God told me so, seek first the kingdom of God and everything shall be added unto you, so most of the time I really don’t worry, I only get shaken when my pessimistic mother gets in my head for a little while. And I’ve been a witness to a Christian relationship or rather two Christians being in a married life, I’ve seen bad examples also but at our church, man, does God know how to put up a love story.

God’ll catch you every-time 😀

Makes sense though He did create the perfect love story about his Son dying and everything, and I really aspire to that in a sense finding someone that God provided, I’m uncertain if it’ll be as easy as meeting a Christian girl and falling in love with her, or maybe God wants me to change people as He commanded “go and make disciples” and exactly the word “disciples” not “wife-fies”. My mind is not ready for this kind of commitment, as to what I’ve concluded, I couldn’t even make a lovey-dovey blog to what I’m thinking but still I thank God.

“I feel good, God’s making me Mr. Right, right enough to find a Mrs. Right, for us to be both right in God’s eyes.”

Which vitamins do you need the most?

What in your life drains you the most?

Do you have friends/family that need these vitamins too?

Most of the time I really experience these negative emotions in life, and this devotion is a great reminder (in my opinion). Aspiring to be a veteran blogger can really drain some out of you, haha LOL, I just really want to let myself talk it out on something that I don’t have to stare at my bad hand writing, and Hallelujah for laptops and fonts that I can clearly see what I’m typing, Praise God 😀

Got Challenges? Teen Devotion

Got Challenges?

I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. (II Timothy 4:7)

There is a famous shoe company who’s motto is: Just Do It!

Well maybe that works in the sports arena, but it gets a little tougher when it comes to life. It seems like sometimes the older we get, the more cynical we become towards life. That’s exactly what Satan would want! The devil throws disappointment our way for that very reason. He doesn’t need to turn us into satanists, just get us whiney, weepy, and wimpy. So here is a reminder of a different kind of life motto: “Just Do It Anyway”

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.

Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.

Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.

Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.

Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.

Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest people with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with the smallest minds.

Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.

Fight for the underdog anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.

Build anyway.

People really need help, but may attack you if you help them.

Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you’ve got and you’ll get kicked in the teeth.

Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

(Mother Theresa)

via Got Challenges? Teen Devotion – Dare 2 Share Youth Ministry Resources.

I guess I’ll blog about my daily devotions. People let the pride get the best of them, this is a great reminder for us all that life is disappointing, so you don’t have to keep whining about it. Grab your work by the neck, hold tight, if it slips, hold it again. Just do it anyway. God Bless us All 🙂

Questions:

  1. Have you given up on most people?
  2. How has Satan made you bitter in the past?
  3. Is your life more challenging than Mother Theresa?
